1) Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in the southeastern American state of South Carolina. Charleston is well known for its unique culture, which blends traditional Southern American, English, French, and West African elements. The downtown peninsula is well known for its art, music, local cuisine, and fashion.Charleston has many historic buildings, art and historical museums, and other attractions.Charleston is known as The Holy City. Charleston is a favorite city in the US for a long vacation and weekend - for its food, charm, culture, and friendliness—and December through February is an overlooked time to visit.Charleston is packed with celebrated restaurants such as Husk, named best new restaurant in America by Bon Appetit last year 2011.The weather is mild—usually in the 50s. and the blooms are spectacular. Charleston has a humid subtropical climate, with mild winters, hot, humid summers, and significant rainfall all year long. Summer is the wettest season; almost half of the annual rainfall occurs during the summer months in the form of thundershowers. Fall remains relatively warm through November. Winter is short and mild, and is characterized by occasional rain.
Magnolia Plantation & Gardens (which dates from 1676 and is the nation's oldest public garden) puts 20,000 pink, white, and green camellias on display. Next door at Middleton Place (founded in 1705 and home to America's oldest landscaped gardens), you can sleep—amid more camellias—at the 55-room Inn at Middleton Place for only $155 per night from December 1 through January 17. Stay at the Elliott House Inn through January 29 and for only $209 per night you get not only a deluxe room and continental breakfast but also a $100 gift certificate to Husk (which is adjacent to the inn) and a guaranteed reservation for a party of four, all via the Husk Dining Indulgence package. Airfare to Charleston has traditionally been high, but Jetblue is starting service from New York (JFK) and Boston on February 28, which should bring down fares on competing airlines. As for Christmas week itself, consider the Carriage and Cocoa package at the Francis Marion Hotel ($139 per night from November 16 – February 28). You get to tour Charleston's historic district via horse-drawn carriage while sipping gourmet hot chocolate, and the hotel overlooks Marion Square, which is illuminated with thousands of lights during the holiday season.
